BELCHER CHAINS

Gold Belcher chains are a popular style of necklace in the United Kingdom and many other countries, including the United States and Germany. A Belcher chain can be quickly identified by looking at the links of the chain in question. The defining characteristics of Belcher chains are that they are made by interconnecting broad and equally sized ovals made from gold wire. There is no specific size or style of link, other than the fact that the loops are generally round or ovoid, in order for a gold chain to be considered a Belcher chain. There are many variations of links found in Belcher chains, though the pattern remains the same.

Belcher chains can be made from just about any type of metal, though gold is generally preferred. Belcher chains can be worn alone or in conjunction with pendants and charms, making it one of the more versatile chain configurations available in today’s market. 9 and 18 carat gold is used for chains subjected to daily wear because these alloys are the most durable. 18 carat gold is generally reserved for show pieces because of the deeper, richer tone and the softness of the metal.

The Belcher chain was named after Jim Belcher, who was born in 1781 and was a prize fighter who popularized a neckerchief accessory which became known the Belcher ring. A Belcher ring is a circle of metal in which a neckerchief was passed through and secured. The shape of this ring was then mimicked by jewellers in gold and linked together to form a gold chain known as the Belcher chain.

The Gold Belcher chain is made predominantly for men, though women have been known to wear Belcher chains. The style is definitely masculine in nature, with some of the more spectacular specimens having very large links, made from heavier alloys of gold.

For women, the gold belcher chain is often worn to hang a pendant.
